# Attraction
**An Interactive Anime**

## Overview

Attraction was a unique interactive anime commissioned by the French Ministry of Health to discourage teenagers from smoking. Anrick collaborated with the anime production house Studio 4°C, with legendary director Koji Morimoto of Akira and Animatrix fame taking control of the animation personally, with Unit9 handling all interactive production.

## Story

Attraction follows the story of three Tokyo teenagers, Hiro, Koichi and Ren, who try to sneak into a nightclub. During the 12 minutes of animation that unfolds, you follow them closely and help them make key decisions, as they slowly discover that life as an adult isn't as fun as they might have expected.

The three kids are tempted by the glamour of Tokyo nightlife, and the cool imagery that is associated with it. But the nightclub environment reveals a hidden layer, as they get sucked into the energy of people on the dancefloor. In the end, Hiro, Koichi and Ren make it out — but shaken by what they experienced.

## Interaction

Interactions are a seamless part of the story and link with the linear narrative. We worked with very early webcam technology, exploring movement capture by tracking the users' eyes and nose. We incorporated this, and other interactive mechanics such as color detection, into the story so players feel engaged at pivotal moments.

## Art Direction

The character design and art direction sketches were all hand-drawn and then animated by Koji Morimoto's team at Studio 4°C in Tokyo. Part of Attraction's magic is the incredible attention to detail in the environments — it brings to life a vibrant Neo Tokyo, and as the story unfolds it feels like slowly exploring at your own speed.
